Skeuomorph

Horseless chariot

Skeuomorphic design use pasts expriences to explain the new. Biggy bag on existing behaviors. Or in fancy terms, help the user to bridge the cognitive gap by using cultural affordances.

Skeuomorphs are created because the future is build out of the present.

– Garnet Hertz

Designers work the schene of thecnologicsl emergence. They gack the present to create the conditions for the future.

Some things may be functionally obsolete but not culturally obsolete. Culture moves in different phase than technology.

– John Payne

Skeuomorph is a design feature of an artifact that is no longer functional in itself, but that refers back to a feature that was functional at an earlier time. [1]

In more plain language, we call these design metaphors.

As Garnet Hertz, a professor at Art Center College of Design has said: “Skeuomorphs are created because the future is built out of the present.” [1:1]
